Meet our Flinders Foundation Board: Q & A with Chair, Travis Schultz

FLINDERS FOUNDATION - Connect | Engage | Support

BOARD PROFILE: Travis Schultz, Chair of the Flinders Foundation Board and Deputy Chair of the Flinders College Board

Q: What does your role involve as part of the Flinders Foundation?

My role as part of the Flinders Foundation sees me leading a group of passionate Flinderians who see the benefit to the wider school community of engaging our stakeholders and nurturing a sense of belonging.

Q: What do you enjoy about being involved in the Flinders Foundation?

I love the fact that working with the Flinders Foundation gives us an opportunity to work with like-minded friends and parents to create a sense of community and improve the experience of current and future students.

Q: In your view, why is the Foundation important to Flinders’ future growth?

The Foundation is important to Flinders’ future growth because it’s important that we have a vehicle through which all parts of the school community can join together as one, and share in the successes of the College. The Foundation is also going to play an integral part in helping to fundraise for resources which will benefit our students, current and future. After all, the students are the reason we exist!

Q: Aside from being on the Flinders Foundation, what is your link to the College community?

Quite apart from being on the Foundation, my link to the College community is largely through my role as Deputy Chair of the Board of Flinders. I am a parent of an overenthusiastic 11 year old currently in Year 6 and, as a result, also connected to many of the sporting clubs within the College.

Q: What is your career role, and why are you passionate about your job?

By profession, I am a lawyer with a practice based in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast. I am fortunate that my professional background gives me the opportunity to work with members of the community on an individual basis and enjoy the collegiality of a profession.

Q: How else are you involved in the wider community? Which projects or events do you support?

Amongst the wider community, outside of Flinders I’m involved in a range ofÌýboardsÌýand organisations. I’m currently on theÌýboardÌýof the Queensland Law Society and Chair of the Queensland Law Society Governance Committee. I serve on theÌýboardÌýof the Sunshine Coast Turf Club and also on theÌýBoardÌýof the Lifeflight Foundation. I work with a number of local charities running events – such as the Wishlist Spring Racing Gala and for SunnyKids, theÌýTravis Schultz Winemakers’ Masterclass. I’m also a wine writer for the Sunshine Coast Daily and Head Judge of the Restaurant of the Year Awards Program.

Q: What are your hobbies or interests?

Outside of my work, I enjoy spending time on the bike, being outdoors and playing various sports with Ashton.

Q: What do you enjoy about living on the Sunshine Coast?

I love the outdoors lifestyle which the Sunshine Coast offers. It strikes a great balance between the resources of a city, but the space of a regional area.

Q: What are some of your favourite spots to visit on the Sunshine Coast? Why?

I love visiting the Sunshine Coast beaches but also enjoy taking a drive through the Hinterland. My favourite activity of all is riding a bike up the Montville Range.

Q: What did you love about your schooling years?

My best memories of my schooling years involve various sporting and extracurricular activities that I was able to become involved in. I met some great people and made lifelong friends – many of whom I’m still in regular contact with today.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

The best piece of advice I ever received was that the road to mediocrity is paved with excuses.

Monthly, we will share Q & A profiles with each of our Flinders Foundation Board members. We hope you enjoy getting to know our wonderful volunteer board members whose mission through the Foundation is to build community and foster philanthropic support to help facilitate the ongoing development of facilities and programs at Flinders for the long-term benefit of our students.
