Meet Old Flinderian, Reina Takeuchi, Flinders Class of 2015
What does life involve now?听
I am working in Brisbane and Sydney as a multi-disciplinary visual, dance and sound artist. I graduated with Distinction from a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Queensland University of Technology, majoring in Visual Arts and Dance, in 2018. During my university years, I was able to work across a number of different projects, including the prestigious Arts Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria. I鈥檝e just commenced a Master of Philosophy in Creative Practice at QUT whilst attending Sydney Dance Company鈥檚 Pre-Professional Year 2019, primarily for dance research.
What was your favourite Flinders moment?
I guess it was filled with a number of different moments - most of which took place in Year 12. Presenting our final projects for Visual Arts and Drama were definitely highlights of my time at Flinders. It really made me hungry to pursue a career in the arts.
Do you have a particular role model or inspirational figure from Flinders or now? 鈥�
So many people! The beautiful staff in the Art Department, Leanne Kennedy (who taught me across three different subjects during Year 12!) and Wendy Lyons.
Did you find it a challenge to decide your next steps after graduating from Flinders?听
During Year 12, I was on the cusp of deciding what kind of path to take, whether or not to pursue a career in the arts. If it wasn鈥檛 for the enriching arts programs at Flinders, I wouldn鈥檛 have felt so passionate about a career in performance and visual arts. For a young person, it鈥檚 really important to feel nurtured in order to feel confident enough to plunge into the unknown.
Did your tertiary study or career go exactly as you'd planned? 鈥�
All in all, it has but one can never really plan life. I strive to live a life that is present, spontaneous and essentially improvised. There have been stumbles along the way but an artist鈥檚 life is about continually being present, persisting and staying interested in your craft.
What advice do you have for current students?
Stay interested and present during your time at school. Flinders is a beautiful community that values hard work and determination. Having said that, also know that the most important lessons in life you have to learn on your own. See the world around you with fresh eyes - that鈥檚 life-long learning!
